In a concerted effort to separate fact from fiction, NASA has assembled a 16-member panel of renowned scientists, federal employees, and industry executives, including a former astronaut. Their mission? To examine and unravel the mysteries of UFO sightings.

The independent group’s role is not to confirm extraterrestrial involvement, though it’s not ruled out. Instead, they address broader national security concerns, seeking answers to what exactly populates our skies. Daniel Evans, NASA’s assistant deputy associate administrator for research, reiterated, “There could potentially be very serious risks to U.S. airspace as a result of us not knowing what is in our skies at a given time.”

The panel analyzed 800 unclassified events, accumulated over a span of 27 years. Only a minute portion, approximately 2-5%, of these cases defied explanation, a statistic that underscores the crucial need for high-quality data collection.

David Spergel, a retired astrophysics professor and the committee’s chair, underscored the challenge posed by the lack of high-quality observations. “Right now there’s a very limited number of high-quality observations and data curation of UAP,” he remarked, advocating for a systematic way to collect public data and diminish the stigma associated with reporting UFO sightings.

Elaborating on this, he suggested that NASA could develop a mobile application to enable people to submit and share sightings, fostering a more comprehensive data repository. He said, “The current existing data and eyewitness reports alone are insufficient to provide conclusive evidence about the nature and origin of every UAP event.”

For years, the mention of UFO sightings evoked thoughts of unidentified flying objects. However, a recent expansion of the definition has broadened the scope to “unidentified anomalous phenomena,” accounting for mysterious undersea encounters and strange sightings in ‘near space,’ the outermost part of our atmosphere.

As NASA prepares its final report expected later this summer, the quest for understanding UFO sightings continues to ignite interest and fuel scientific endeavor.
