Monday, June 27, 2011 – Top Russian astronomer Andrei Finkelstein said that we can expect an encounter with extraterrestrial civilisations in the next 20 years.
“The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms … Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years,”
He spoke at an international congress dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life and he added that 10% of the planets in our galaxy resemble our home planet Earth. If there is a water, there can also be a life, he said, adding that extraterrestrials would probaby resemble us, with two legs, arms and head.
“They may have different color skin, but even we have that,” he said.
His institute is managing a programme started in cold war space race in 1960s to watch for a radio signal from outer space, like SETI.
“The whole time we have been searching for extraterrestrial civilisations, we have mainly been waiting for messages from space and not the other way,” said Finkelstein.
