  1. The explosions fears that are heard near Cape Fear are actually explosions of gas pockets seeping upward from the ocean bottom. Friction is causing this. These bubbles of gas will either burn a bright orange or explode like natural gas. They can be scary but really harmless unless your boat is sitting on top of one of those bubbles. I’m surprised local Meteorologists haven’t explained this. Highly unlikely this is anything else. Even with a temperature inversion wouldn’t necessary cause these sounds. Back your local Meteorologists in a corner and make them find your answers. I’m a Scientist and I know I’m correct about this.

  2. part two- I should also explain that these bubbles of natural gas is of limited supply. Once the pressure deep down in the soil has released enough gas then the explosions will cease. However they will reappear in other areas of the ocean. At one time many years ago these bubbles of gas were blamed as the cause for boats/ships missing in the Bermuda Triangle. I hope this helps settle some nerves.

  3. Sorry, here is a web site that explains it more. This can happen anywhere in the world. Australia has many of these also. theage.com.au/articles/2003/10/22/1066631498889.html
